Phil Robertshaw is the 2016 National Scrabble Champion - October 2016 (more)

Phil Robertshaw (38) of Nailsea (originally from Ellesmere Port) finally reaped reward for his dedication to years of serious Scrabble word study and practice when he won the final critical game in round 17 at this year’s ABSP National Scrabble Championship (NSC) in Milton Keynes against Lewis Mackay (Cambridge) to take the title.

52 players from around the UK took part, each having qualified through regional events earlier in the year. With the field including two past world champions and several previous NSC winners, Robertshaw had to be at the peak of his game to win 14 of the games.

ABSP/NASPA reciprocal arrangement - July 2011

ABSP members will now be able enter tournaments in North America without, as previously, having to be a member of NASPA. Under the agreement NASPA members are treated as if they are members of the ABSP when entering tournaments in the UK. NASPA membership and rating information is available on the NASPA website 'membership tools' page.

Please note that, at this stage this is only a bilateral agreement between ABSP and NASPA. Associations will be looking to broaden the arrangements but no deals with other WESPA member associations have currently been agreed.

New Players Event: London, August 20 - July 2011

Please note, this event has unfortunately had to be cancelled.

Congratulations to Craig Beevers who won the 2011 ABSP Masters with 12 wins out of 16 games against 15 other top-rated UK players. He had to win his final game against Wayne Kelly to secure the title and stay ahead of Mark Nyman and Wayne, which he did convincingly, leaving them second and third respectively on 11 wins. Full tournament details can be seen here.

2011 Rating Changes - January 30th 2011  (more)

For the 1,671 players active in the previous 5 years, 92% had no ratings change on conversion, or a change of 1 point (up or down). No-one's rating changed by more than 4 points. The main reason for the bigger changes was where a player's oldest current tournament, which may have contributed only 1 or 2 games to the previous ratings calculation, was fully restored in the calculation. If that tournament performance differed significantly from the player's Dec 31st 2010 rating, there could be a 2 to 4 point change in the new rating.

ABSP Website Relaunch - January

ABSP are pleased to announce the relaunch of its website. Users should find it easier to navigate around but still with all their favourite sections, and with a substantial refresh of content.

Members should think of this as their website - the more contributors, the merrier! Please submit any suggestions, ideas and feedback to the webmaster.

As before, official communications to members will continue to be through OnBoard magazine.

WESPA Rules OK - January

WESPA logo From 1 January 2011, WESPA rules version 1 apply without variation at all ABSP-rated events. See the WESPA website for more information.

Players at the recent UK Open and subscribers to uk-scrabble mailing list will be aware of some dispute over the application of a few of the rules. Tournament Coordinator Steve Perry is consulting with Tournament Organisers on the matters, but in the meantime please clarify with the Director if you have any questions on what is acceptable.
